Toby Edward Rosenthal – Elaine (1917). Rosenthal’s Elaine portrays the poignant final voyage of the “Lily Maid of Astolat” from Arthurian legend. Bathed in somber twilight, the lifeless maiden drifts upon a flower-laden barge, guided by a solitary boatman across still waters. The delicate interplay of light on her pale form and the surrounding gloom captures both purity and tragedy, transforming the scene into a moving meditation on love, loss, and the passage into eternity.
