Created during Sir Walter Raleigh's expedition to the Americas, this striking illustration depicts a heavily tattooed Pictish warrior, inspired by early descriptions of the ancient people of northern Britain. The warrior carries a severed human head- a symbol of victory and prestige in Celtic tradition - while his body is adorned with fantastical tattoos featuring owls, faces, and mythical creatures. Blending historical observation with Renaissance imagination, John White's image reflects both the fascination and misconceptions surrounding the Picts in the late sixteenth century.
