drawing-in-the-dark-henry-moore-s-coalmining-commission
Drawing in the Dark: Henry Moore's Coalmining Commission

In 1941, Henry Moore accepted a wartime commission that took him underground at Wheldale Colliery, the Yorkshire mine where his father had worked. The drawings that followed give bodies, tools and passages a remarkable physical presence, shaped by confined space and limited light. Chris Owen’s study examines this less familiar part of Moore’s career.

Sketches, finished drawings and contextual photographs help explain how the commission developed and why it mattered to the artist’s later work. Owen follows the project from observation in the mine to its wider artistic consequences. A particularly fitting choice for readers interested in modern British drawing, industrial subjects and the ways darkness can become an active part of a picture’s structure and emotional force.

Book Details

Author / editor: Chris Owen

Publisher: Lund Humphries Publishers Ltd

Format: Hardback

ISBN: 9781848226036

Publication date: 02/11/2022

Language: English

Delivery & Returns

Supplied to order, subject to availability.
