"All is Vanity" (1892) by Charles Allan Gilbert is a famous optical illusion illustration that cleverly juxtaposes beauty with mortality. At first glance, the image appears to be a human skull. However, upon closer inspection, it reveals a woman seated at her vanity table, gazing into a mirror. The woman's reflection, along with the objects on the table and the shape of the mirror, form the illusion of a skull. The artwork is a classic memento mori—reminding viewers of the transience of life and the futility of vanity.
