Dante & Virgil in Hell | Henri Druard | 19th Century

Fine large 19th Century French scene from the Divine Comedy of Dante and Virgil's journey to hell, oil on canvas. Large scene of Dante and Virgin crossing the River Styx as the Barque is surrounded by the tormented souls of Hell as the City of the Undead burns in the distance. The composition is almost identical to Delacroix's famous 1822 work. Some dryness to the surface and opportunity to enhance and restore if desired. Signed verso and presented in its original antique gilt frame.
