Mermen | Hans Thoma | 1900

Hans Thoma’s Mermen (1900) presents a striking and unconventional take on mythological sea beings. In this oil painting, two muscular mermen with human upper bodies and scaled, serpentine tails emerge from churning waters under a grey, overcast sky. Their expressions—one introspective, the other cautiously observant—evoke a mysterious tension, blurring the line between human vulnerability and mythic power. Thoma’s naturalistic style and muted palette lend the work a somber realism that contrasts with its fantastical subject.
