This dramatic painting illustrates the climactic scene from Washington Irving’s "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", in which the terrified schoolmaster Ichabod Crane flees through the dark woods as the spectral Headless Horseman bears down upon him. Quidor heightens the sense of terror and motion through swirling foliage, plunging shadows, and the frantic leap of the horses, capturing the moment when superstition and imagination overwhelm reason. The work stands as a vivid example of early American Romanticism, blending folklore, literature, and landscape into a haunting vision of pursuit, fear, and the power of storytelling.
