The Eye of Silence | Max Ernst | 1943

In "The Eye of Silence" (1943), Max Ernst constructs a vast and uncanny landscape of eroded, monumental forms that seem part architecture, part fossil, and part living organism. The scene unfolds like a petrified dream world, where strange towers and organic structures rise beneath a turbulent sky, evoking both ancient ruins and alien terrain. Created during the turmoil of the Second World War, the painting carries an atmosphere of desolation and quiet menace, transforming the landscape into a surreal meditation on time, destruction, and the silent endurance of matter.
